HistoryFor the routine family holiday in 1986, Martin Freestone and family visited The Gambia, and like so many others before and after they succumbed to the charm of this smiling coast and gave thought to owning a plot of land enabling them to visit the country whenever they wished. They acquired a costal plot of land near Kololi Springs and the Senegambia Hotel, in those days the whole area was open bush land adacent to Bijilo forest. The Holiday Ownership Club and the site infrastructure were developed, a borehole was drilled guaranteeing a permanent and plentiful supply of fresh water, along with a sewerage treatment works and electricity generator station making the club independdent of Gambian utilities, which at the time were still very limited. In keeping with the plans for five-star quality, the villas were designed and all necessary materials imported from Europe. Using local labout, with expatriate builders to supervise, the first villas were completed in 1989. The whole Freestone family took part in various aspects of developing the resort, and were soon joined by the new members who quickly became involved in the club's development, and it is this extended family of members who still contribute to the ongoing success of Kololi Beach Club. |
